What to do with the kids this summer…

What to do with the kids this summer…

Kids love them; parents may have a different opinion… yes, the school summer holidays are nearly here! This year, the dates for Oxfordshire are Thursday 26th July to Monday 3rd September. The time that you envy all those teachers out there, but they do deserve a break sometimes too! Read on for what to do with the kids this summer ideas…

The school holidays don’t have to be stressful and expensive. Like adults, all children are different, so we’ve put together a selection of activities that we hope will help you and the rest of your family enjoy some special time together this summer.

We suggest checking out the relevant company’s website or head to Witney Tourist Information Centre to find out about the latest offers and discount vouchers before you book anything.

The #LoveWhereYouLive child

First up are walks – perfect to keep fit, save pennies and explore the local area. The John Harris’ Walking in England website has free walks to download and print. The Oxfordshire County Council website has lots of information about walks and rides for the whole family too.

The creative child

Do you have your own little Lowry, or maybe their work is more in the style of Pollock? Stock-up on arts and crafts supplies from Marks and Spencer, get inspired with a trip to Fresh or update their dressing-up box with some new accessories from Accessorize and Monsoon.

Perfect activity: The Pottery Place, Witney for a spot of painting and craft workshops or introduce them to an art gallery with a range of fun and creative activities at Modern Art Oxford.

The sporty child

Does the Energizer Bunny come to mind when you think of your little ones? Where do they get all of their energy from? Whether they love tennis, running or football, make sure they’re fully kitted out with the great range of active wear from Marks and Spencer for girls and boys. Debenhams too have a vast range of sportswear for girls and boys.

Perfect activity: Let them run wild with a day out at The Leys, Witney – a spacious, adventure playground, paddling pool, tennis courts, crazy golf, bowling greens and football pitches – we’re exhausted just thinking about it! Or if you have older children that fancy trying something new, why not take them for a session at Rock Solid Climbing Wall, Oxford which has a bouldering room, bottom rope wall and Walltopia lead tower!

The adventurous child

Fatface have everything you need to get kids set for a summer full of adventures. We especially love their awesome range of dinosaur tees – a recent collaboration with the Natural History Museum. One even glows in the dark!

Perfect activity: If they’ve ever dreamt of being a spy, then this is the day out for them – the Witney Spy Mission Treasure Trail! Another idea is The Pitt Rivers Museum, Oxford, which offers free drop-in family events and object handling opportunities.

The ‘I’m hungry’ child

Growing fast? Only just eaten? Don’t worry – here at Marriotts Walk we cater for all mouths, whatever your budget. Pop in for a quick, fresh, bite to eat at Subway or Caffe Nero, or if you want to spend a bit more quality time, head to Frankie & Benny’s or Café Rouge.

Perfect activity: If you don’t have time to stop off at one of our restaurants or cafes, try making something at home instead. Get some food inspiration from Marks and Spencer with recipes to use up vegetables and reduce food waste – educating and feeding the kids at the same time. For those with a sweet-tooth, see the latest Hot Chocolate and Sweet Treats at Whittard. We can’t wait to try making their Hot Chocolate Milkshake!

The ‘I’m bored’ child

If you’ve exhausted all of the above, we’d say it’s time to book some tickets to Cineworld – stimulate their imagination, whilst giving yourself a little break too!

Perfect activity: Packed to the brim with history, wear them out with a day out at Oxford Castle Unlocked or get rid of all that surplus energy at Partyman World, Oxford – a multi-level play area where kids can climb, clamber and slide over all sorts of adventurous obstacles.

The younger child

Whether it’s baby accessories, kids’ sun and swim, or post-natal support for you, JoJo Maman Bebe have everything you could possibly need for the summer holidays.

Perfect activity: Two lovely days out are The Story Museum, Oxford, and Cogges Manor Farm, Witney, both suitable for children of all ages.

Where are your favourite local places to go and things to do during the summer holidays? We’d love to hear your top-tips of what to do with the kids this summer! To find out about local holiday play schemes see the Oxfordshire Council website or Oxford Active.
